Who can participate: Anyone aged 16+
When: Sunday 18th October approx 10am-4pm
Where: Walton on Thames, Surrey

| Level 1 Coaching Course | What: This Course is an introduction to coaching skills with a major emphasis on the ‘how to coach’ skills rather than the ‘what to coach’ skills. Despite this there is a large practical element with the coaching theory element of the course being taught and then put in to practice alongside technical sprint, endurance, jumping and throwing activities.
Coaches will receive a coaching manual with complete notes from the course and following completion of a CRB check through UK Athletics the coach will receive a coach pass and license (usually within eight weeks). At Level 1 a coach is qualified and insured to coach under the supervision of an athletics coach qualified to Level 2 or above.
Who can participate: Anyone aged 16+.
An assistant coach does not require athletic ability and we will also pay for your training to get a UK Athletics assistant coach qualification
When: Sunday 5th July approx 9am-5pm
Where: Ewell, Surrey
If you are interested please contact Paul Cousins; tel: 01483 772 156 or email: wokingac@o2.co.uk

| Members’ BBQ: Sunday July 19th | By way of a thank you to all our members for their continued support, particularly those who help us at events, (and to give me a chance to meet more of you), we are holding a BBQ at the club on Sunday 19th July. We aim to start at midday and finish up around 3pm; as well as enjoying the BBQ you will have the opportunity to join us in a game of Rounders and maybe a tug-of-war! The invitation also extends to your families.
WAC will provide sausages and burgers, but please bring anything else you would like to eat and drink with you.
It is really important that you let us know if you can come, and how many people will be in your group; we don’t want to either over or under cater!
Those helping on the gate on Tuesdays and Thursdays will have a list of names. Please let them know your name and how many people you are bringing with you. If we do not know you are coming, we cannot guarantee there will be enough for you.
We look forward to seeing you there

| Safeguarding Courses |
Safeguarding Courses
In addition to the coaching and officials courses currently available, we are also able to offer all our volunteers the opportunity to participate in an accredited “Safeguarding” (child protection) course. The course would take only an afternoon or a morning and will be run either at the club or the Parkview Community Centre. Dates are to be confirmed but the course would take place any time from mid-July onwards.
If you are interested, please let me know by emailing me @ wacvolunteer@googlemail.com I would need your name, contact details and when you are NOT available/ able to participate in the next couple of months.
Once I have an idea of numbers and availability of those wishing to attend, we can book a date.
This course will be very interesting and, as it is accredited, could be something useful for your CV!

| Club Records | Dave Nichols broke the clubs 5 mile (Road) 0/65 at Windsor on the 30th April with a time of 36.26 previous record was held by old Tom since 1996. During the race that I broke the record in 1996 the snow continued to fall during the race and I got knocked over by a snow plough and they could not find me under the 6 foot of snow for 10 minutes. Well done Dave. The only record I hold now is for lying.
Another (Road) record broken after 10 years (April 1997) was the ladies 0/40 5k held by Susan Davies.
Kay Trinder ran 19.59.95 at Bushey Park on 9th May. They all look easy until you have to run them.
Record Breaking Nichols: Most athletes try to peak for a race but Dave Nichols has been training to peak for ALL 2009 and so far succeeding. At the Vet’s T&F league meeting held at Basingstoke on May 18th Dave competed in the 800m and recorded a time of 2.51.00 so breaking the existing record of 2.57.6 held since 1992 by the worn out/shot to bits/shell shocked world war veteran (Army No.19141140) Well done Dave. Again.
Gary Bradbury broke the senior men’s 1500m record at a BMC meeting (Manchester) on 30th May running a time of 3.44.4 beating the existing 3.45.5 that has been held by Stuart Crossman since 1988 (21years). Stuart achieved his time also at a BMC meeting at Crystal Palace.
During the Vet’s league match at Portsmouth on 27th April, Linda Baldwin competed in the 2000W as usual among her other normal events. Checking the results for club records I saw Linda’s time and noticed we had no record. This I had over looked in 2008. Then I remembered Linda was in the 0/60 category last year so her 2000W time (2008) was superior to her time on 28th April 2009. So I corrected the record to read 14.50.2 from 2008. This is now the 0/60 2000W record. Sorry Linda.
I have noticed the U/13 Boys/Girls now compete in a few new events (To me) and as there are no existing records. So as to give the age group target’s to aim for I have taken the following three U/13 athletes times from the three events they have competed in during 2009 as the present club records.
IF any one in this age group has run faster in these events let me know (Boy/Girl) also Event, Time, Venue and Date.
The U/13Boys: now compete in a 75H event. Thomas Buckland ran the event in the Surrey Championships and finished in the Silver medal position with a time of 14.8 (Now Club Rec.).
The U/13 Girls: now run a 70m sprint - also a 150m sprint event(s)
Jasmine Mitchell ran the 70m event in 11.7 and Ellie Lane competed in the 150m in 21.1. Both the girls ran the above events in the NYAL at St. Albans on the 17th May. Well done Thomas/Jasmine/Ellie.

| Chairman’s Message | Sally Taylorson (our new Volunteer Coordinator) started this week and has certainly hit the ground running. After a whirlwind round of meetings with club members and local volunteer organisations she has already got her sights on some new sources of volunteers. It is too early to make any formal announcements, but watch this space. Sally is also lining up some training programmes for July, one on safeguarding children (suitable for all volunteers, coaches and officials) and one on food hygiene (suitable for anyone helping with catering and refreshments). Anyone wishing to attend either of these courses or to join her volunteer force should contact Sally directly on WACVolunteer@googlemail.com
