Elmore 7 mile 17th July (Surrey Road Lge. Series race 5 of 7) Chipstead
My first visit to this really beautiful „olde‟ world village and to make it more enjoyable the village Flower Show Fete was held in conjunction with the race. Parking was so well organised in an almost manicured large field. There must have been nearly 200 cars there (all free). The fete/stalls were so clean and looking around you could not find one fault. A band-stand for the evening festival. Plus dog show. And what caught our teams eye was the GIANT tortoise walking freely about. Our girls were hoping it was the „live hare‟ for the race warming-up. During the race Jenna thought she was having hallucinations while running along past a field and seeing a THREE legged goat running about. Jenna slightly bewildered but did not stop to count them as she was in third scoring position.
The course was very undulating starting from the fete area. Andy Smith knowing the route we went along to the 1.25 mile post and watched them come along before they turned right along a quiet country lane towards the main road. Keeping to the main road for 1.5 mile before turning off heading for home along 4 miles of beautiful tree lined pleasant English quiet country lanes. Oh! Yes along those beautiful tree lined quiet lanes there were a couple of really BIG English unpleasant HILLS. But they did not worry Andy and myself.
There were about 300 starters. Justin Mitchell was just off the first four bunched together. And kept his position although three of the four in front lost touch with the leader and were spread out with 2/3/4 and 5th places all separated at the finish by 250m. Nicely judged by Justin although he was disappointed with his run and felt sluggish. Michael Baggott was our 2nd man along following Rose Nicholson. Michael learning very quickly to be patient and weigh up the pace of the surrounding athletes. And today he kept as close as possible to Rose. Also he knew Anna Sharpe was on his heels all the way this was helping him to have a good run at a sensible pace. Brother Richard was the surprise of the day. Andy and myself did not expect him to keep his position and pace going for the whole 7 miles. But he did plus his last 400 was excellent. Well done Richard.
At the start of this series the ladies decided that with the depth and the talent in the club they should have a go for the series team prize and maybe individual ones if possible. Well after 5 races of the 7 they have achieved their target and cannot be caught for 1st team prize. During these five matches 1 or 2 sometimes 3 members have not been available through injury or other commitments. Now this is where the depth part comes in with the camaraderie and spirit of each one of them ready to fill any gaps. And SUCCESSFULLY too also with a couple as a back-up. The squad has kept in first team spot from race one and has also been first team in 4 out of 5 races. Plus coming away every race with individual prizes. Today Rose Nicholson was 1st lady with Anna Sharpe in 2nd place; Jenna Tarrant 8th and Ramona Thevenet Smith 10th. Barbara Rodriguez was 3rd 0/55. Today there was no team trophy just individual awards (the team still get the points awarded).
When Rose came past us the first time „Determination‟ was written across her bib number and running with perfect flowing action looking in top form and came back into the finish area after 7 miles looking so relaxed; Anna having to miss the Tuesday evening interval sessions owing to work and says she misses them, but can still hold her own up front with the faster athletes and without any sign of labouring when anyone moves alongside to challenge her position. A very strong competent athlete. Jenna continuing to look more comfortable racing on the road every event. This comes about with her growing confidence knowing her training is geared for longer distances than 800/1500/3000 track events. Her running style doesn‟t look so tense and has improved so much during the past year. Well done Jenna (ABC) Ramona Thevenet Smith finished in 10th place giving us 4 in the first 10. Very few Surrey clubs are that strong in talent but not necessary got the depth. Ramona having run Bushy Park in the morning was still capable of good performance in this event by keeping Jenna in her sights. Barbara Rodriguez returned from Spain two weeks ago after 6 weeks in Spain (too hot there to run) is gradually getting acclimatised and back to her running routine. Quite pleased with her run today by not finishing tied. And also feeling ready for a training run the following day.
